Okay Soranik Natu’s reaction to finding out she has a son in the future with Kyle is intense. I mean she is completely over reacting to Kyle not telling her, and brands him violently with the symbol of the Sinestro Corps. What the hell?! That seems out of character right? Or has she gone crazy? I hope Kyle is okay – he is the greatest of Green Lanterns after all. In the end, John decides to announce to the the Corps that Tomar-Tu murdered a yellow lantern. While I like that John is always honest, that was probably not a good idea. Are we leading to another war with the Sinestro Corps?

Green Arrow 21 – 25

Juan Ferreyra’s art is beautiful. I Can’t get enough of it. Every panel is filled with detail. Broderick is gathering a bunch of baddies, including Brick who I remember from the Winick Green Arrow run, to destroy Seattle and it is strongly hinted Seattle will be renamed Star City in this issue. That is just weird. Why not just have Green Arrow move from Seattle to his usual fictionopolis of Star City instead of removing any Seattle story from being told in the DCU in the future? But I will see how I feel about it when it happens.

Mayor Domini is obviously a stand in for Donald Trump and I loved it. Seattle is getting destroyed by these Four Horsemen in very disturbing ways. Crash at the Airport, the road lights are all shot out, buildings are collapsing, and they even manage to go after the Green Arrow treehouse. Damn I liked that thing!

Hal is dumb as hell in this issue – completely oblivious to the people around him – and that means Venditti is writing his character well. Meanwhile, I love how Kyle has become another star of this book and is finally back in the spotlight. The bromance between Guy and Arkillo continues to put a smile to my face – I hope they stick together for a while. Speaking of Kyle though, I thought it would be a long time before Soranik find out that the villain from the future was her and Kyle’s kid – but she scans the body and finds out in this issue. The Green Lantern who committed the murder turns out to be Tomar-Tu which I did not see coming. It is revealed by a Vuldarian – is this just an easter egg – or do you think Venditti will reintroduce Guy Gardner’s vuldarian warrior powers again? I’d like to see that.

Robson Rocha really hit it out of the park with the art in this issue. Wow! Ever panel was breathtakingly beautiful in this issue where Dr. Polaris nearly pulls the Justice League watchtower out of space and on top of a city but is stopped by the two starring Green Lanterns. Doctor Polaris is turned into such a tragic character in these pages. Good issue.

Yay the first GL to show up in this issue besides our star Jessica Cruz is none other than Kyle Rayner! This is apparently the first time Jessica has met Kyle – I am frankly surprised that she has never heard of him. Hasn’t she done her research on the past Green Lanterns of Earth? He even says he used to have her job. In fact, Kyle and Jessica have a lot more in common than that. Both of them got their rings spontaneously and were not trained at first. Anyways, it was great to read about Jessica’s introduction to the Green Lantern Corps headquarters too and I look forward to seeing Guy train Jessica and Kyle train Simon! So glad Hal Jordan is not involved…that guy sucks. PS Ronan Cliquet is a great artist.

First of all, it is so amazing and gets me all nostolgic to see Kyle Rayner back in his old Green Lantern duds. Too bad he did not make the cover of this book. Can’t we just change it’s title to Kyle Rayner and the Green Lantern Corps and make Hal the Spectre already? This was a good issue and it does give me hope to see the Sinestro and Green Lantern Corps working so well together. I love Arkillo and Guy Gardner’s new bromance especially. The final page cliffhanger is a great twist though.

Will We Get Bart Allen Back?

The Flash (Volume 5) #24

Reverse Flash seems to remember the Pre-New 52 history of the Flash and that makes me happy because he referes to having raced all of Flash’s Proteges – which I assume would mean there is more than just Wally West – he is referring to Bart Allen too! Bart has been painfully missing since Flashpoint. I know that the version that appeared in the new 52 was nothing like the real Bart – I hope this means we get him back some day. Reverse Flash even asks Kid Flash if he is impulsive – which I assume is referring to Bart’s original code name of Impulse. This was a great issue – I even liked the moments between Barry and Hal – two characters I think should be dead. The artist on this book also seems to much improved from before. There were some great moments – including the Flash running down a Green Lantern construct slide. The final moments in the 25th Century lead me to even more proof maybe Bart will be back sooner than later and Iris’s futuristic origin will be restored.

The Flash (Volume 5) #21

Ok this is Part 2 of the Button crossover with Batman that began here. Flash is investigating what happened to the Reverse Flash in the Batcave. Barry decides to use the Cosmic Treadmill to follow the energy signature on the button to its source. Which honestly seems like a dumb move by the Flash considering what happened the last time he used it. Batman joins him (it is never really explained how Batman is just running behind the Flash on it) and they see elements of the timeline from before New 52 and Barry even says it is not an alternate universe but part of the stolen years! The real DCU IS BACK BABY! We see Martian Manhunter as forminmg the league and Identity Crisis and Barry’s death during the Crisis. I was smiling with joy as I read these pages.

As happy as I am to have a new Green Lantern book that is not starring boring old Hal Jordan, I can’t say I was excited to read this. Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz have not interested me one bit in the Justice League book. Simon just seems like a jerk and Jessica is so unsure of herself it becomes not sweet, but annoying. I was hoping under a different write I would feel differently. This issue did not win me over, but maybe future issues will because the art was good and I am interested in the Red Lantern sub-plot. Oh and Dex-Starr!

Now this was more like it! By focusing on Jessica learning about her ring with her sister, Humphries made me actually understand her character better and what she is going through. Hopefully we will get a similar focus on Simon. This series just got good.

Trinity 1 – 6

2008 – 2009’s Trinity Maxi-series was…well…bad. Nothing of consequence came from it and it really was a waste of everyone’s time and money. Nearly a decade later can DC create a good series starring their trinity of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman? If I had to judge from the first issue alone, I would say Manapul has hit one out of the park. In this issue, Batman and Wonder Woman decide to meet with the Post-Crisis Superman at his new home for dinner.  Superman brings up a story that Dick Grayson told him about Batman Pre-Flashpoint and Bruce has no memory of it. Interesting considering my theory that the ten years taken away thing means that their memories have just been erased. But this was early in Batman’s career, so it may just be chunks of time adding up to ten years and not a consecutive ten years? Anyways, there were many things I loved about this, but most of all the art. Manapul takes advantage of being both the writer and artist by setting up some rather beautiful and creative way to do the panels on the pages. I also loved how this book – unlike the first volume of Trinity – seems to  be firmly set in the DCU. It references the main series of its main characters and what is going on in those books. That is how to build a real cohesive universe and I am glad DC is doing that well in this Rebirth era. The final page through me for a loop too…what is going on there?

In this issue, Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman seemingly go back in time and meet with Jonathan Kent in Smallville but the final pages reveal that they are all actually under the spell of Black Mercy and imagining it while Poison Ivy has attacked them with it. This was a beautifully drawn issue. But the Black Mercy thing has been done so many times before and it has been done with the Trinity so many times before, I wish Manapul had thought of something more original to do.

This is the the first issue of Justice League after DC Rebirth and I have to say I was…underwhelmed. I ceratainly felt like I could come into this as a new reader (although there wasn’t much explanation of each character) and understand it but it was just another crazy disasters happening all over the world story. Although I know there is this Kindred subplot…I guess I expected something more. I mean maybe it is just after reading Detective Comics it just seemed like nothing happened in this single issue compared to what happens in every issue of that series.

I wish I could say that I was impressed with this issue but I really feel like not much happened here. They talked about the problems and then Batman went to go get Superman. That was really it…. hard to recommend a single issue if very little happens. All I kept thinking about was I miss Martian Manhunter. Talk about a character who has been screwed since Didio took over. He was the heart of the League and when I see him you think “Justice League.” Why the hell is he not on this team?

Now this was a bit better. This still seems decompressed but more happned here. It is the first I have seen of Lois since I started reading Rebirth so that was good although you would think by now she would be used to these kinds of things with her husband. I think Tony Daniel upped his ante on the art in this issue. I found myself enjoying quite a bit more than the previous issues. I wonder what the Kindred’s connection is with the League and these Zodiac Crystals.

Hitch is guilty of the “Brad Meltzer” trope of having the Justice Leaguers call each other by the real names all the time. Come on. Why in the hell would these new Green Lanterns know the Flash’s secret identity. Anyways, for some reason the Sigil of Truth showed up in ths issue so I imagine this storyline is going to go into an occulty direction which I am excited about. But this is seriously decompressed.

In this issue the Kindred say they are looking to bring about a Forever Crisis, and it was in bold. I think that was on purpose. Is Rebirth leading to another Crisis event? Or am I seeing things that are not there. Either way, I wouldn’t say I super enjoyed this first story arc of this series, but at least we got that interesting tidbit.

For someone who is wearing an Indigo Tribe ring, John Stewart hardly acts compassionate in this issue. I question why he was given that ring anyways. All of the others make sense…not so much with John and the Indigo ring. This issue was actually really cool where the four Lanterns go underground in OA and see where the rings are forged. They meet an Alien named Shedd who is apparently protecting the ring of the “first Lantern.” It leave you with just enough to keep you wondering what other mysteries lie within.

John continues to show no compassion and my man Kyle Rayner – Greatest of Green Lanterns – points that out after John straight up kills Mogo to save the Corps. Kyle refuses to give up hope and wants to bring Mogo back. Not only that but Kyle saves Guy Gardner’s life here by being the only one who is competent enough with his ring to utilize its power right. In this issue it is said that Guy actually is in love with the Green Lantern Corps more than Ice. I am not sure I buy that Guy loves the Corps more than Tora. That seems pretty awful. All-in-all, this was a good issue.

In this Guy Gardner solo issue, Guy meets a beautiful Alien dignitary who he falls for and she swiftly kills him as she kisses him. Guy is revived by her assistant who betrays her and takes her down. It was actually an enjoyable read and a good way to do a one and done story. Good art too.

 

 

Green Lantern: Emerald Warriors #12

This was another terrfic one and done story. In this issue, Guy faces a beast who apparently has a taste for eating Green Lanterns. He swallows them and then keeps them barely alive in its stomach. This is a scary creature and I hope it comes back one day or its brother because Guy basically kills it.

This was an action-packed yet at the same time – a lot of fun- final issue where Guy Gardner and Batman team up to solve a murder that happened on a space station. First of all, the DCU earth has apparently almost reached light speed capabilities? That seems a little crazy. But outside of this, it was great how quick Batman solved the case and how Batman and Guy played off each other’s strengths. You can tell Batman respects Guy more than Hal – and who wouldn’t?

You have to give it to Geoff Johns, he knows how to write a good comic book. I go back and forth between loving and hating the man (I really only hate him for bringing back Barry and Hal, and for his ridiculous explanation as for why men cannot be Star Sapphires.) but this was a damn good issue and it was so cool to see the four Earth Green Lanterns having to use other colors. Hal is Yellow Sinestro Corps, John is a compassionate Indigo Tribesman, Guy is of course a rage-filled Red Lantern, and Kyle – my favorite GL – is a Blue Lantern of Hope. It fits them perfectly!

Green Lantern (Volume 4) #66

In this issue Hal and Guy fight the Guardians who have now been transformed by the different Lantern Colors by Krona. In the end, it is revealed Krona plans on remaking Guy and Hal into new Guardians to run the Corps with him. Beautiful artwork and well written. I can’t really say anything bad about it.

Green Lantern (Volume 4) #67

This is the final issue of this volume of Green Lantern before the New 52 awful reboot. From what I understand the Green Lantern franchise was barely effected by the New 52. (I wonder if that has anything to do with Geoff Johns’s power at DC Comics? Actually I won’t wonder I am sure that is exactly the reason.) I love that Johns has Kyle use his drawing skills to save Carol! Kyle Rayner is the best Green Lantern and the most relatable. I still wish he was the star of this book but it is cool to see Johns respects the character and uses him well. The ending of this issue brought a smile to face as Hal Jordan’s ring is taken away and he is dismissed as a Green Lantern for killing Krona. Good, he should be. (I know this doesn’t last but I wish it did.)

Booster Gold 42-47

Booster Gold tells the story to his sister about his time in 25th century prison where he is cellmates with a man who is constantly fluctuating between time periods – the man is revealed to be a future version of Booster himself with “Chronal leprosy” which is actually really gross as drawn by Batista. Interesting issue. I enjoyed it I suppose.

Booster finds himself running into the Legion of Super-Heroes in the 31st century which makes this a fun issue as Brainiac 5 works to cure Booster’ chronal leprosy. This was a fun issue. Giffen and Dematteis write some great dialogue between the legionaries and you can tell Batista had fun drawing them.  I wonder if the dangling plot points will ever get solved as I believe the next issue begins a flashpoint crossover.

I was excited to read this issue despite it being a Flashpoint crossover (a mini-series I have never read and have no interest in reading considering it lead to the disgusting New 52) because I remember Dan Jurgens’s run on this book rather fondly. Jurgens’s art is as beautiful as always and he writes very well but damn I don’t really care about Flashpoint and could not get excited reading this issue. That being said, I love the shout outs to continuity about Coast City. Jurgens knows his continuity.

Booster Gold (Volume 2) #45

The Flashpoint crossover continues here as we learn the girl Booster saved has powers. Who is she suppose to be? I am not sure. I do not recognize her name. This was another good issue by Jurgens – as the man can draw and write like a champ. But I still find it hard to care because I hate flashpoint. Albeit, I am intrigued by the mystery girl.

This was a very forgettable issue. I am sad this is the penultimate issue because this series is usually great under Jurgens but this flashpoint crossover is uninteresting. I really don’t care about seeing Booster Gold fight Doomsday again.

First of all, Booster calls the Flash Barry in this issue. Why would Booster Gold call him by his first name like they are friends? His character knew Wally West as Flash for his entire career. Ugh. It’s bad enough Barry Allen had to take up most of the cover on the last issue of Booster’s series. Jurgens only drew the last few pages and Leonardi is okay but he is no Jurgens. This just seemed last filler when it should have been a series finale. Disappointed.

Justice Society 50-54

So Martha Kent designed the Superman costume? I am pretty sure that flys in the face of continuity. Also I am pretty sure Alan Scott was in retirement when Hal got the ring right? Does DC not have editors? That being said it is always cool to see how the modern heroes knew about the Justice Society growing up which is what the first part of this anniversary issue focuses on. The secon story has something to do with Per Degaton traveling between universes. The third is the JSA vs. the House on Un-American Activities in the fifties being retold, and then finally the modern day JSA sets up shop in Monument Point just as Jay Garrick is sworn in as mayor. I really liked how Guggenheim threaded all of these stories together and it all lead up to certain events in the modern story. This issue mattered and that is so important in serial storytelling.

At one point in this issue it says Jay Garrick is the first superhero to be elected to office. That is not true I know at least Green Arrow became mayor of Star City but maybe the person didn’t know. Anyways Lightning makes it out of the after life okay and alive and there is a touching moment between her and Doctor Fate. Also, Jay Garrick kicks into gear as the Mayor of Monument Point and we get hints that there is a strange history behind the city that I am excited to find out about. Derenick draws the shit out of this book and does a wonderful job. I sometimes feel his facial expressinos always seem menacing though when the story doesn’t call for it.

This was another good issue. Mr. Terrific finds out the man who took away his intelligence is a deranged original Mr. Terrific fan kind of like the same guys who complain whenever a hero is replaced meanwhile the JSA and the Challengers of the Unknown go deep underground Monument Point to learn about its ancient mysteries. I enjoyed it.

Wow Jerry Ordway sure is a breath of fresh air. Why can’t he be the book’s regular artist? He is perfect for the JSA and while I have liked what Derenick has done lately he really only draws menacing facial expressions even on the good guys. This was a fun issue where the JSA accidentally release a God who draws his power from metahumans. I can’t believe this is the penultimate issue of this series though.

Damn…just damn. This was clearly not Guggenheim’s plan to have a rushed ending to this arc and have Alan Scott sacrifice his life so quickly and without much fanfare. The fact of the matter is that the true JSA Villain is Dan fucking Didio who has no respect for the DC Universe and has publicly complained about the JSA “being old” in interviews. He is responsible for the awful New 52 and I am so glad the real JSA will be coming back soon. I wonder how much will remain in continuity but I have to say Guggenheim’s run could have been great but it was cut off too soon.

Titans 34-38

Despite hating what happened to Lian Harper and the disgusting way Dan Didio has talked about killing her,  and then what happened to Ryan Choi… this was a good issue and that is due to the creative team telling a strong story. I am actuallu interested in what is to come of Osiris and this creepy guy who takes people’s eyes.

 

Titans (Volume 2) #35

Another good issue of this dark series. I hate how Lian and Ryan have died but Eric Wallace sure knows how to write and Fiorentino knows how to draw beautifully. There was a lot of story in this issue. Wallace isn’t writing for the trade and I like that. The ending where Deathstroke has to fight essentially the creatures from the movie “the Descent” was quite creepy. I wonder if Vixen will ever form her new street team of heroes (Which ironically is how she originally joined the League in the 80’s right because Aquaman wanted to remake the team like that). All of the plots in this book are interesting.

Titans (Volume 2) #36

This issue wasn’t as good as the last. The art seemed weaker and it ended the arc too easily to me. It was exciting to see the Justice League show up at the end to take Deathstroke to task for the murder of Ryan Choi. Other than that it was only okay. I don’t really care much about Tatooed Man’s arc which is what most of this issue was dedicated to. Deathstroke mentions that Roy and Jericho were once on the same team but…was Jericho and Roy ever on the Titans at the same time? I don’t remember if they were. It seems not but I could be wrong.

This was a return to form as Jericho is resurrected by a device Deathstroke helped Sivana create. Then they offer to bring back the dead relatives of the Titans including Lian Harper! I was screaming yes! But the problem is that it might also give Lian eternal life which is hell I guess but Roy should know that in the DC Universe they will figure out how to fix that. Bring back your toddler who didn’t deserve to die at he hands of Prometheus/Dan Didio! Can’t wait to see how this concludes.

In the final issue the machine that would have ressurected Lian Harper is destroyed which is too bad but I guess Roy is reformed now and has decided to lead the Titans even though Jericho is now it’s only member. Wallace is a really good writer and I hope he landed somewhere else in DC’s line up after this book. What I like the most is that he included a heartfelt funeral for Ryan Choi which showed he respects the character even though I am sure that editorial forced him to kill Ryan. I am glad Ryan returned in DC Rebirth but I wish it was the same Ryan Choi. I hope in the end it will turn out that everyone’s memories had just been erased and that it is the same Ryan without his memories of being the Atom. Long live the real and original DC Universe!

Kyle looks sweet as a Blue Lantern and he almost saves the day here while Ganthet chews out Hal Joran for his decisions. Yay! Why am I the only one that seems to not understand how much better Kyle is than Hal in fandom.

Did John Stewart just blow up Mogo?! Sure looks like it. Wow. I hope not for good. This issue was awesome, because of Bedard’s writing, and the fact that it had no Hal Jordan. Those are the best issues. All comics without Hal Jordan. It was cool to see John absorb the Black Lantern energy and Kyle use ghosts of dead Lanterns to inspire hope with his blue energy. Great issue.

 

Green Lantern Corps (Volume 2) #61

While there was no Kyle Rayner in this issue and that is a bummer, it was still a fantastic issue as we see John Stewart teach a new lantern the power over brains over brawn even among the Green Lantern Corps. It was interesting to see two planets together soon and I am sad that Mogo is gone but oh well. HDR’s art was beautiful!

This issue luckily focuses on my favorite Green Lantern Kyle Rayner and his relationship with Soranik Natu. Of course I loved it. I think the idea that the Star Sapphire can teleport people they have emotional connections with to wherever they are located to be a neat idea. In this issue, a star sapphire feels it is her sacred duty to keep Kyle and Soranik together and Kyle reveals to Soranik his true love is actually Jade. I like that that relationship has not been forgotten after all these years. HDR turns out some great artwork too.

This was a compilation of quite well done character studies of different Green Lanterns as they react to the events of the War and having had Krona make them do horrible things. It is a shame Tony Bedard did not get to write the series finale but Kolins is a good writer too. I will miss this book.
