Casey Brinke, Flex Mentallo, and Danny the Street work together to defeat Terminox and the Ventra in this weird (in a good way) series that barely makes any sense but is fun and exciting in the weirdest way possible. I love everything about it and I hope it lasts for a long while. The Doom Patrol isn’t officially back together yet it is unclear to me who is going to be officially on the team or if it will ever be a team but it seems the break out star of this book is going to be Casey Brinke who has an incredible costume in my book. Casey Brinke should team up with Halo! Speaking of Halo…she would be an interesting character to join the Doom Patrol. She is a weirdo too.

This is the first issue of the new Doom Patrol series under DC’s Young Animal imprint. Which I take it is a mature readers imprint not unlike Vertigo was but set in the DC Universe? I can’t say I was a big fan of the previous Doom Patrol series by Keith Giffen but I like the concept of the strange superhero team enough I guess. I was surprised that series is even referenced in this issue with Oolong Island on someone’s shirt…someone who might be Niles Caulder? I have to say I was pleasently surprised with this issue. We only really get to see Robotman and Niles…everyone else seems new and the team hasn’t been formed yet but this book sure was delightfully weird.

The second issue sees the girl Casey Brinke meeting Danny the Street or well..Dannyland, and Flex Mentallo. Meanwhile, Negative Man is walking around without his Negative side and Robotman nearly destroys Casey’s apartment in a fight with Aliens. I have no idea where this is going but I am along for the ride.

This series improves each issue as Casey Brinke finds out she is simply a creation of Danny the Street come to life from reading an old comic book about her. Meanwhile, Robotman tries to help Negative Man and they decide to rebuild the Doom Patrol. All of Doom Patrol’s history is seemingly acknowledged in this comic – meaning Flashpoint or whever caused the timeline issues did not effect them at all. Good. This is a lot of fun.

How cute is Casey Brinke’s sidekick Fugg? He better to stick around. We need more funny sidekicks. Remember Topo the humanoid Squid during that Aquaman run? I miss his funny squid ass. In this issue, Danny and Casey ride an ambulance through space and time while she dresses like Rainbow Brite-ish. Who couldn’t love this off-the-wall series?!

This issue ends the crossover with Secret Six. I hadn’t read the previous parts in years and it was basically incomprehensible for this reason. DC needs to be consistent on doing short recaps in every issue. Why can’t they do that and then just cut them from the eventual trade paperback. The only part of this I understood was that Veronica Cale plans on booting the Doom Patrol from Oolong Island.
Doom Patrol (Volume 5) #20

The Doom Patrol have been kicked off Oolong Island and are looking for some place to lay-low. In a hilarious scene Robotman goes to the Hall of Justice and quickly offends the crap out of Congorilla. Elasti-Woman heads to Titans Tower and gets told by Beast Boy the Doom Patrol are not considered a probable terrorist group. Negative Man goes to Gotham City and gets told by Dick Grayson the same thing and Negative Man makes a good point that bad things follow Batman around too. In the end, they are convinced they have to take back Oolong Island from the M.S.E. It was a good issue but the art bothered me…a lot.

This issue serves mostly to recap the history of the Doom Patrol and they don’t do a great job of not making it confusing. I don’t know, it just didn’t jive for me and I usually like these kind of issues.

This is the final issue of this series before the New 52 awful crap reboot of the DCU. It actually ends up on a cliffhanger where it seems Niles Caulder has gotten away. Otherwise the art and the writing in this book never made it easy to understand or enjoy. I am not too sad to see it go.
