Xombi 2-6

I LOVE this series! The only thing that would make this better is if Cassandra Cain showed up – it is like John Rozum is writing for me. The big bad turns out to be Maranatha. In real life, I thought that was a Gnostic name for Jesus but in the DCU I guess it is a monster. I love Catholic Girl and Nun the Less’s badassery. I mean this issue had Novena Bullets where the bullets take on the attributes of the saints they are named after. Rozum is a fun genius!

In another fantastic issue we see Maranatha defeated. I literally loved every single page of this comic. From the dead ghosts talking about how they wasted their lifetimes, to the Nuns, to the final page where we learn Roland Finch is up to something with this chart. There is something very Grant Morrison-esque about Rozum’s work here. Every page could lead to a wonderful wokipedia search. Xombi is a powerful character too, coming back even after having his heart ripped away.

In this issue we learn that the girl from the previous issue comes from a floating sky island of immortals that has been taken over by Finch. Finch is one evil motherfucker as he basically destroys her life. How have these “strongholds” (there are apparently 21 of them) never been noticed by the Justice League or anyone in the DCU till now? That must be some powerful magic. It is really cool. In the end of the issue, Xombi and his crew go to another stronghold for help. This is a great addition to the DC mythos.

The team (do they have a name?) discover the location of the ninth stronghold in this issue and prepare for their attack on Finch. Xombi mulls over whether or not he will have to give up his old life and his mortal girlfriend now that he is Xombi. It seems to me that Rozum should have had a major DCU guest star in one of these issues…it might have saved it from cancellation. Of course, it may just have been canceled for the dumb New 52. Another fantastic issue though.

In this amazing finale to this series, Finch is defeated but not before Xombi faces evil dental monsters and people with big eyeballs for heads and a Sisterhood of Mummies. How can one not love this book! I am so sad to see it ending. Hopefully one day we get more Xombi goodness for Rozum and Irving.

Seriously?! I have never read the original Xombi book but in one issue Rozum and Irving have me hooked! Read this book people! This is crazy far-out stuff I can’t even explain it. Catholic Girl, Nun of the Above, violent snow angels, underground prisons! This is all in one issue! The concept of the character is even cooler than I thought.
