As happy as I am to have a new Green Lantern book that is not starring boring old Hal Jordan, I can’t say I was excited to read this. Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz have not interested me one bit in the Justice League book. Simon just seems like a jerk and Jessica is so unsure of herself it becomes not sweet, but annoying. I was hoping under a different write I would feel differently. This issue did not win me over, but maybe future issues will because the art was good and I am interested in the Red Lantern sub-plot. Oh and Dex-Starr!

Now this was more like it! By focusing on Jessica learning about her ring with her sister, Humphries made me actually understand her character better and what she is going through. Hopefully we will get a similar focus on Simon. This series just got good.

Holy crap this was good as the two new Green Lanterns fight Bleez, Simon somehow cures her of her rage. She was a beautiful princess I guess before the rage took over her. Jessica gets in the way and turns her back into a Red Lantern on accident but not before she tells Simon it is the Hell Tower that is the problem. We also learn more about Simon and he became more relatable to me. How did they have so many artists in one issue but all the art looked the same?Hats off to them.

I did not expect at all to see clues to Rebirth and the remixing of time and space to be in this series but here they are as this exiled Guardian claims he saw evidence of someone tampering with time and space and that this lead to the creation of Simon and Jessica as Green Lanterns. Meanwhile Jessica and Simon are finally getting along after he gives her a pep talk in the hell tower.

The rookie Lanterns go toe-to-toe with a bunch of Red Lanterns and things are not going well. That is all I really have to say about this issue. Jessica Cruz really needed to go to Oa to train when she became a Green Lantern or Hal should not have let her be one – it seems too dangerous. But Hal is a pompous douche so it is in character.

It was great to see Jessica finally make a construct and for them to be getting along as partners. Even though they believe they defeated the Red Lanterns, they haven’t. But I am more interested in the rogue Guradian and his Phantom Ring. That should be interesting. Good issue.

It was pretty sweet that Simon was walking around in only an apron and pants in this issue. Thank you Ronan Cliquet! This was a very sweet and fun issue as Simon’s family gathers for Halloween and Simon is worried about telling his overhearing mother he is Green Lantern. She ends up being okay with it after eating the cookies he made for her. Meanwhile, Simon’s nephew is messing with the Rogue Guardian while he meditates. I really enjoyed this issue.

The history of the Phantom ring is explored in this Halloween special issue. I enjoyed it. Not much else to say about that.

This issue entirely focused on Frank Laminski in one of the better introductions of a tragic villain I have read in a long time. This Humphries guy is good! A man named Frank Laminski was obsessed with becoming a Green Lantern over the years became more and more dedicated to getting a ring as he saw more Green Lanterns come about. Aside from his dumb comment about Kyle, I actually feel bad for the guy. He almost got the ring but the ring changed its mind when it chose him and said it was an error. I wonder why? Has that ever happened before? I suppose we will find out. He is eventually told about the Phantom Ring by Volthoom. This story arc should be good.

Frank Laminski gets a hold of the Phantom Ring in this issue and becomes the Phantom Lantern and wow is it awesome. You basically have all the power rings in one. Meanwhile, Jessica really shows herself as a hero by saving a little girl from a fire. The fire was actually started by Frank as a diversion so that he could get the ring. I am enjoying this series way more than I thought I would.

First of all Hal Jordan is not the greatest man to wear the ring like Jessica says…Barf!  Other than that, this was another fantastic issue as the Phantom Lantern poses as a Green Lantern and saves a kid but is confronted by Simon and Jessica on live television before turning into an Orange Lantern. I can’t wait to see where this goes.

It is more Green Lanterns vs. The Phantom Lantern as we delve deeper into all three of the characters, I really feel bad for Frank. Interestingly, he hasn’t become a Blue Lantern yet.

We learn more about the Rogue Guardian who apparently was the architect of the Green Lantern Rings too and Volthoom. Meanwhile, the Green Lanterns fight the Phantom Lantern who finally turns into a Blue Lantern. Another good issue.

I love how when the Phantom Lantern turns indigo he feels so much compassion for others he finally sees he needs to take off the ring but then immediately regrets it. It is almost like the ring acts as a drug. Jessica gets a hold of the Phantom Ring and when she puts it on she only becomes a Green Lantern…finally proving herself she is worth of the Green ring. That was a great moment. Oh and so was the whole issue as Volthoom has switched bodies with the Guardians and tells them he will stay with Jessica and Simon to train them.

Hey St. Roch and Blue Valley showed up in this comic! Also, Middleton home of the Martian Manhunter, who should be in the Justice League! You know how I love my fictional cities. Also Portsmouth shows up – the home of Dr. Midnight. Are they hinting at the JSA’s return – I sure hope so! This issue focuses on a Day in the Life of the Green Lanterns and Jessica sure needs to get on anxiety meds and pronto – but it was a sweet issue and Simon is clearly a good friend to her.

The Green Lanterns head to Gotham and I love that Batman tells Simon he can’t have his gun in Gotham City and then proves Simon totally wrong about the Sinestro Corps. That is my Batman. I was disappointing to see Simon was right about the Scarecrow. The guy needs to get rid of his gun…it doesn’t make him an interesting character, it just makes him a gun nut.

Batman calls Hal Jordan a glory hound in this issue and convinces Simon to give up his gun. I love Batman! But who doesn’t. It is interesting that Batman says he has taken a liking to Simon. Does Batman not like Kyle? I bet he does. Great issue.

We learn about Volthoom’s origin on Earth-15 in this issue which is something I did not know about. It actually takes you through his entire history and it is the best work Robson Rocha has done on the series to date. Every panel is beautiful. I have to say that Humphries has done a better job of getting me interested in the Green Lantern lore than Geoff Johns ever did.

It seems Sam Humphries loves DCU geography like I do because in this issue Gateway City shows up. I always though that Wonder Woman should make her home there permanently and become the hero of that city instead of moving her around with every new writer. I wrote this statement and then I turned the page….and Jessica Cruz says why did Wonder Woman ever move away from here! She read my mind! This was another great issue as the Green Lanterns face Doctor Polaris.
