As happy as I am to have a new Green Lantern book that is not starring boring old Hal Jordan, I can’t say I was excited to read this. Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz have not interested me one bit in the Justice League book. Simon just seems like a jerk and Jessica is so unsure of herself it becomes not sweet, but annoying. I was hoping under a different write I would feel differently. This issue did not win me over, but maybe future issues will because the art was good and I am interested in the Red Lantern sub-plot. Oh and Dex-Starr!

Now this was more like it! By focusing on Jessica learning about her ring with her sister, Humphries made me actually understand her character better and what she is going through. Hopefully we will get a similar focus on Simon. This series just got good.

Green Lantern 65-67

You have to give it to Geoff Johns, he knows how to write a good comic book. I go back and forth between loving and hating the man (I really only hate him for bringing back Barry and Hal, and for his ridiculous explanation as for why men cannot be Star Sapphires.) but this was a damn good issue and it was so cool to see the four Earth Green Lanterns having to use other colors. Hal is Yellow Sinestro Corps, John is a compassionate Indigo Tribesman, Guy is of course a rage-filled Red Lantern, and Kyle – my favorite GL – is a Blue Lantern of Hope. It fits them perfectly!

In this issue Hal and Guy fight the Guardians who have now been transformed by the different Lantern Colors by Krona. In the end, it is revealed Krona plans on remaking Guy and Hal into new Guardians to run the Corps with him. Beautiful artwork and well written. I can’t really say anything bad about it.

This is the final issue of this volume of Green Lantern before the New 52 awful reboot. From what I understand the Green Lantern franchise was barely effected by the New 52. (I wonder if that has anything to do with Geoff Johns’s power at DC Comics? Actually I won’t wonder I am sure that is exactly the reason.) I love that Johns has Kyle use his drawing skills to save Carol! Kyle Rayner is the best Green Lantern and the most relatable. I still wish he was the star of this book but it is cool to see Johns respects the character and uses him well. The ending of this issue brought a smile to face as Hal Jordan’s ring is taken away and he is dismissed as a Green Lantern for killing Krona. Good, he should be. (I know this doesn’t last but I wish it did.)

Corps Take Over

Okay things go to hell for the Corps really fast in the first part of “War of the Green Lanterns” as Krona and the entities take over the Guardians and restore Parallax to the Central Power Battery. Oh and a bunch of folks get stuck in the book of the black. It was really good for an opening chapter of this crossover, but a little too much Hal Jordan and Johns’s annoying Hal Worship going on.

Still A Little Too Much Hal

Well I got to hand it to Johns, I did not see that coming. So apparently Krona was behind the manhunters’ slaughter of the Lost Sector and his motivation makes sense for what the character was trying to prove. Benes and Sayaf don’t do a half-bad job here either. Overall quite a good comic and great prologue to the next GL event but there was a little too much Hal Jordan in this.

Batman Is The Best

Hahahahahahahahaha I love Batman’s comments about Hal Jordan – he hates him just as much as I do and that is why Bruce Wayne Batman is my favorite Superhero (Besides Cassandra Cain of course). I worry what that vision was that Hal had – one of the Lanterns of Sector 2814 is going to die? It better not be Kyle. Anyways Krona gets the best of Hal in this and Hal acts like an idiot as usual.

The Green Lanterns under the control of the evil telepath guys all kill themselves in a sad and disturbing scene and Kilowog is deeply affected. Meanwhile, Guy Gardner reveals why he made the pact with Atrocitus. Interesting stuff.

Guy’s in trouble! The telepath guy I can never rember his name has control of Sodom Yat. Shit! But the real break-out star – as the cover suggests – is Bleez. She is just hilarious as she casually kills of the planet guards and drinks her own blood as the other lanterns talk. I love her! I wonder if she will be staying her or transfering to the new Red Lantern Corps book when it begins.

Yay!!! Hal Jordan doesn’t even appear in this issue as the focus is put on Atrocitus! How can anyone say the success of Green Lantern since Rebirth is because of Hal Jordan! Johns never focuses on him and even has issues without the character! The success of Green Lantern is because of Geoff Johns’s world building, not Hal Jordan people.
