Going into this new series I did not know what to expect. I thought maybe DC was doing this to sell a series in China but I don’t think they would let a comic book be sold there that has “conspiracy theories” the Chinese government. I did end up finding this first issue to be a lot of fun. Yang is building almost a paralell world to Superman’s world in China with his own Lex Luthor and Lois Lane. But why Shanghai, why not make up a fictional Chinese city? The character of Kenan Kong…the new Super-Man is very interesting in that he is not a reluctant hero. He seems excited about gaining powers which is so different from how these things are usually done in comics.

Young Kenan Kong is now the Super-Man of China and meets the Bat-Man and Wonder-Woman of China. This Dr. Omen is putting together a Justice League for China. I quite enjoyed Dr. Omen’s no nonsense characterization and Kenan Kong is also a lot of fun. He is so excitied to be the new Super-Man he announces his secret identity on live tv.

The new Justice League of China start to bond and come face-to-face with a sea monster in another amusing issue of this super-fun series. People should be reading this. I am loving it.

I called it in my head that Kenan’s Dad was the leader of the Freedom Fighters. It was the only thing that makes sense. This was another good issue as the Justice League of China take on the Freedom Fighters who seem like the real good guys.

Ok in one Issue Super-Man went from being on the Justice League of China’s side, to being on the Freedom Fighters of China’s side, to back again with his Dad now on his side. It was good and I am still excited to learn more about the DCU’s China as this series progresses.

Okay a lot happened in this issues. Super-Man’s father dies, and he vows with the rest of the Justice League of China to find out who ordered his mother’s death – but then it implied that Dr. Omen is in love with his Dad or may even be Super-Man’s mother. Whoa. Plus his powers are tied more into Chinese culture with the whole using Superman’s Qi thing. I think that is a cool idea.

This was another fun issue of this series that made me chuckle at parts – especially the overconfidence of Super-Man as he is being trained by i Ching – who it is great to see again. I am really falling for these characters. I think it is cool that the Academy of the Bat in China has a “Gotham Arena.”

Okay why did this series not open with this arc – it is far more interesting than the first arc. Kenan is coming to terms with his powers and really hates how he hears all the bad things happening to people and must stop it out of guily. Meanwhile, Bat-Man’s sister turns out to be the one looking to sabotage him. The way that the i Ching not only compares the symbol on Super-Man’s chest, but also his powers, to the trigrams and talks about how symbols can have multiple meanins,  was beyond cool. You have to read it. And the final page – well why wasn’t this more talked about in the comic book press – the final page is just genius. The cover from Detective Comics #1 from 1935 is recreated perfectly as the character who was on it shows up and declares he is the beginning and there would be no superheroes at all without him. That was a Morrison-esque moment if I have ever saw one and amazingly meta. I hope Yang sticks around DC for the long hual, even if this book gets canceled.

Yang just knows how to bring comedy into his comics perfectly as i Ching translates between Kenan and Lex Luthor fabricated lines to make them both appear better to eachother – and to rip on Kenan for his own amusement. I am beginning to live i Ching. He reminds me of a mix between Mr. Miyagi and the old perv guy from Dragonball Z. Tan draws the Metropolis skyline as a very futuristic city – something I haven’t seen in a while in comics or hadn’t noticed although I know it a traditional characteristic of the big Apricot. Anyways, so the solar power that Kenan got his power – and how the real Superman gets his power- comes from Diyu – the Chinese version of Hell? Or is Lex wrong here? I mean if we are going to use supernatural stuff can we not use Linda Danvers somehow? She was last seen in Reign in Hell you know. Oh how I miss Linda Danvers.

The New Super-Man unlocks his x-ray powers and teams up with the OG Superman in this issue that ties into Rebirth, Superman even asking for Kenan to be ready to help fight whoever is fucking with the timeline. This is turning out to be one of the best series DC is putting out. Meanwhile, Kenan discovers his parents are not in the afterlife and therefore possibly not even dead – I still think Dr. Omen is his mom. I am not sure I quite understood the final page – what is I Ching up to?

Hell yes the greatest of all DC Heroes, and the one true Batgirl, Cassandra Cain makes the cover of this issue of New Super-Man! Man it is great to be a Cass fan (it would be perfect and even better if she was still Batgirl but I can’t compain). Sadly, it is just a cover of DC’s East Asian heroes and she doesn’t actually appear but I hope someday! Anyways, this was another incredible issue as Kenan gains superspeed and races the Flash of China and Wonder-Woman of China’s past comes back to haunt her. I am not sure who Super-Man Zero but he is sure looks cool.
