Supergirl 18 - 20

Supergirl (Volume 5) #18
Written by Joe Kelly
Art by Alé Garza and Adam Archer

Well, the doppelganger wasn’t Linda Danvers, it was Dark Angel trying to mess with Supergirl’s mind. It seems the monitors wanna make sure Supergirl “belongs” on our earth and isn’t an anomaly. I liked how what Dark Angel was saying was similar to the complains current fans have about this Supergirl. That was a nice touch by Kelly and I think he made his point in the end by proving this Supergirl is here to stay.

Supergirl (Volume 5) #19
Written by Joe Kelly
Art by Alé Garza

Supergirl flies across the country making amends with the people she has hurt. Beginning with Boomerang and ending with Superman. In this way, Joe Kelly caps off his run perfectly. I really feel like this is a new era for the character and she is going to be a lot less angsty now. Joe Kelly’s run, while confusing sometimes, he did the best he could with what he was given. I applaud him for that. Great issue.

Supergirl (Volume 5) #20
Written by Tony Bedard
Art by Renato Guede

Tony Bedard begins his fill-in arc by crossing over with Amazons Attack. Now that turned me off reading this at first but after cracking it open, I was amazed at how well-done it was. This was definitely the best issue of this series yet. Supergirl is more likeable than ever, which makes sense after the previous issue, and she is drawn anotimically correct and not anorexic. We get inside her mind and she doesn’t seem like a total bitch. I loved it! Plus seeing the civilian side of Amazons Attack was refreshing. There was also nice use of Supergirl’s powers with the Super-Breath and her weakness against magic. A very good start for Bedard.

Jason Todd Gets Kicked In The Balls!

Teen Titans (Volume 3) #47
Written by Adam Beechen

Adam Beechen begins what will be a very short-run on Teen Titans with this issue. Initially, I didn’t like it. I am not sure why now, maybe it was because of the art change. I am not sure. But on the second read, I did enjoy it and felt that it was good for what it was. We get a fight with Match and the investigation of the Joker’s Daughter’s murder from Countdown. I don’t think you have to read Countdown to understand this but it would be good if you did. I liked the ending, it got me excited for the next issue. I even liked that Wonder Girl chose to go to Supergirl to talk her problems out as we have seen them become friends over in Supergirl’s own book. My favorite moment must be Robin kicking Jason Todd in the balls. That was hilarious and a great moment. I laughed out loud. We all know Jason deserves it more than anybody.

Teen Titans (Volume 3) #44
Written by Geoff Johns
Art by Tony S. Daniel

I am psyched! Seeing one of my all-time favorite characters, Batgirl, redeemed like she is in this issue was sooo damn awesome! The final page was great and I have to give kudos to Tony Daniel for it. Everything else this issue is perfect and spot on. I loved every moment of it.

Teen Titans (Volume 3) #45

If anyone want to see a kickass cliffhanger ending, then look to this issue. Seeing the older Titans tell the Titans East and Deathstroke to “GET THE HELL OFF OUR ISLAND” gave me goosebumps and I actually screamed a hell ya out loud while reading. If this is what Adam Beechen’s run is going to be like, I am down for the ride.

While I liked the conclusion to this arc. I liked Donna saying that they are going to make Titans Island theirs again and Deathstroke giving his children a “real family” but I am disappointed to see that there really isn’t any closure to the Batgirl thing. She seems still willing to kill and then just disappears? What the hell! Oh well, you can’t have your cake and eat it too I guess. Sadly, this is Johns’s last issue with the title. I am going to miss you, Geoff, you made this title one of my favorites for forty-six issues.

Wow, I mean just wow. That is the word that sums up this issue, wow. This was a very emotional read…so many great moments. Teen Titans is the best series that DC is putting out right now and I think everyone should be reading it. I feel like anything I say about this issue will be an understatement. It is just that good. The ending was kinda shocking but not unlikely, lots of people come together in the face of trajedy. I just hope to god it does not become a regular thing. I loved the scenes where the members talk to Cyborg and basically all of the other scenes in this issue too!

That one page where they listed all the members of the Teen Titans in the last year with their picture, that got me so excited! I can not wait to meet each and everyone of them. This book is really making the most out of the one year gap. I love the rivalry between Wonder Girl and Ravager. The team’s roster is now Wonder Girl, Robin, Cyborg, Ravager, and Kid Devil. I imagine that more members will join up as this storyline unfolds.

I think I drooled a little bit while reading this. It was just that good. I love Miss Martian, I hope she joins the Titans full time. I hope she is not the traiter. Zatara is a brat but I still like him, don’t know why. Bombshell, I don’t like. She seems like such a bitch. I hope Ravager isn’t the traiter. I have loved her in this book so far.

I sure as hell am glad that Miss Martian nor Ravager is the traitor, but it the one character I hated, Bombshell! The Teen Titans kick her ass this issue too. I look forward to seeing Jericho back on the team and back alive. He may have a terrible costume, but he is a great character. Now that I think about it, the Titans seem to be always searching for Raven. Someone should tell her this time not to run off again. Great Issue. Can’t wait for the next!

The New Teen Titans Meet The New Doom Patrol

June 9, 2006

Teen Titans (Volume 3) #36
Written by Geoff Johns
Art and Cover by Tony Daniel and Kevin Conrad

I really loved this issue. It single handedly got me looking for old Doom Patrol issues. This was a team I could care less about before and now I am fascinated with them. Thank you, Geoff! There were so many great moments in this issue I was drooling. The chief is a weird son of a bitch, Vox is an improvement of the Mal Duncan character, Bumblebee is as cool as ever, Negative Man (not Hush my bad) and Robotman are back as well as Elasti-Girl who has been “regrown” by the chief. Tony Daniel is quickly becoming my current favorite artist. And Geoff Johns remains as my all time favorite writer. Even with an entire superhero team guest starring in this issue, Geoff still manages to make it about the titans. We learn a secret about Kid Devil which shocked me. In about three issues I already care about the character and I wonder why he made up all the calls from Blue Devil. Geoff even manages to make me like the Brain and Monsier Mallah, I never thought that would happen. Great Issue!

Losses of Loved Ones

Superman/Batman #26
Written by Sam Loeb with Jeph Loeb, Allan Heinberg, Joss Whedon, Joe Kelly, Brad Meltzer, Mark Verheiden, Brian K. Vaughan, Geoff Johns, Joe Casey and Paul Levitz
Art by John Cassaday, Joe Madureira, Jeff Matsuda, Ian Churchill, Ed McGuinness, Rob Liefeld, Jim Lee, Tim Sale, Arthur Adams, Joyce Chin, Mike Kunkel, Duncan Rouleau, Carlos Pacheco, Michael Turner and Pat Lee
Cover by Michael Turner

This issue made me cry. For two things, Superboy and Sam Loeb. Sam could have really went somewhere in Comic Book writing but he was taken too soon. This issue stands as a tribute to him. Ironically, the issue also deals with the (fictional so not quite as sad) loss of Connor Kent aka Superboy. It is the melding of these two losses that makes this issue about grief and death but also friendship. Robin and Superboy were best of friends and in order to deal with Superboy’s death Robin speaks of the happy times with his friend. This is something we should all do, it really does help. Having lost people myself, I know there is nothing like reminiscing about the wonderful times you had with that person that helps the pain so much. I almost feel guilty about critiquing this book but the art did have its flaws. The change in art changed so rapidly that it caught me off guard. But in the end it is a minor flaw that will obviously occur if you have fifteen artists. The biggest tear jerker was the back up story in which the Kents speak of Clark’s friendship with a young boy named Sam. (Clearly based off of Sam Loeb). The main story was also pretty good and showed that Sam was a talented writer. I liked the part where Superboy jumped into the hot tub with the other half naked Titan Robots and he was telling Robin to lighten up a bit. It really epitomized Robin and Superboy’s friendship. Loeb and DC did a wonderful job of commemorating both Sam Loeb and Connor Kent in this issue.

The Ravaging Slut

Teen Titans (Volume 3) #35
Written by Geoff Johns
Art and cover by Tony Daniel and Sandra Hope

Tony Daniel is quickly becoming one of my favorite artists and I think everyone should check out his blog which I have linked on the right. He really makes the One Year Later Titans twice as good as they were before. I really am liking this new status quo. I know, I know, it seems like I like everything but I don’t care, I think that is a good thing. Much Like Robin’s new costume, I think I am finally used to Wonder Girl’s new attire. It is growing on me. I loved the overtly sexual scene with the Ravager and Robin, that was just funny and unlike most femal heroes, it makes sense for the Ravager to be slutty. I mean she is the daughter of Deathstroke for christ sake. The only real problem I found with this issue is the brotherhood of evil. I really don’t get what is so fascinating about them. I never have found them that interesting but apparently a lot of people like them since they keep coming back. The last shot of the new Doom Patrol was cool and I seem to be the only one that assumed that that was Hush and not Negative Man at first. I am probably wrong about this since everyone else in the internet comic communuity assumed it was Negative Man but I am still hoping I am right and it is Hush. Just so I can say I was right!

Plastic Lad Returns!

Teen Titans (Volume 3) #34
Written by Geoff Johns
Art and Cover by Tony Daniel and Sandra Hope
Variant Cover by Ed Benes

Well, the revelation of this issue was also revealed in this week’s Infinite Crisis #6. I will not be reviewing Infinite Crisis because it is so good that I feel that any review could never do it justice. Anyway, Superboy is dead and for the first time while reading a comic, I actually cried. Connor Kent will be missed by this blogger. Over the past year, the Titans have changed a lot and now are a team consisting of Robin, Cyborg, The Ravager, and Kid Devil. Despite being on this cover, Wonder Girl has not rejoined the team yet. I really enjoyed this issue and I think the titans have changed the most of any of the DCU teams in the missing year. I also loved the cameo appearence of Luke aka Plastic Man’s son. Finally maybe Plas will start to return to his pre-kyle baker greatness ( I hated that cartoony series). In the final moments of the issue we find out that Robin is apparently trying to reclone Superboy. This is an interesting development in that this will probably do more harm that good. If Robin succeeds, this will not be Connor, he will not have the memory or the personality of Connor so it will probably depress everyone even more but I can see why Robin would want to do it. Of the new members, I am interested in learning more about Kid Devil and the Ravager. I think they made a great duo, a sort of team inside a team, and I do not know much about their characters.
